FREDERICTON - New Brunswick health officials say a measles case in the south central region is the province's first confirmed infection of the year.

A news release says the case in Sussex, N.B., involves a person who travelled to the area from another province between June 22 and June 23.

Officials say they believe there are other measles cases in the region.

The new infection comes after the province told ´ºÉ«Ö±²¥last week that school immunization data last year indicated about 10 per cent of children were not fully vaccinated against measles.

Health officials from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island also reported vaccination rates among children that were below the 95 per cent threshold recommended by scientists to prevent the disease from spreading.

Canada has seen more than 3,700 cases of measles this year.
