NEW YORK (AP) 鈥 After a Broadway season that delivered 14 new musicals and the same number of new plays, there's lots of uncertainty when it comes to the Tony Award nominations. But one thing that's practically a lock is Audra McDonald hearing her name called.
The record holder for the most Tonys by a performer 鈥 with six 鈥 is almost guaranteed another nod for her turn as Rose in a hailed revival of 鈥淕ypsy,鈥 a role that led to previous Tonys for the likes of , Tyne Daly and
Many of the other categories are a lot harder to predict ahead of by Tony winners Wendell Pierce and Sarah Paulson.
鈥淪tranger Things: The First Shadow鈥 co-director Justin Martin says he's been excited by the mixed offerings this season 鈥 silliness and seriousness and everything in between.
鈥淲e can hold all that, but it does feel like there is a lot of desire for escapism at the moment. And I wonder whether that is to do with the political situation,鈥 he says.
Predicting the top musicals and plays
Best new musical will likely contain the android rom-com 鈥淢aybe Happy Ending,鈥 the comedy about frenemies 鈥淒eath Becomes Her鈥 and the corpse-centered That leaves two slots open, perhaps taken by the immigrant tale 鈥淏uena Vista Social Club,鈥 the British farce 鈥淥peration Mincemeat,鈥 the revue 鈥淪tephen Sondheim鈥檚 Old Friends鈥 or the bio of a cartoon 鈥淏oop!鈥
The best new play category will likely see the loony bio of Abraham Lincoln's wife 鈥淥h, Mary!,鈥 the drawing-room drama 鈥淧urpose鈥 and the feminist 鈥淛ohn Proctor Is the Villain.鈥 That leaves two slots for worthy candidates like the Pulitzer Prize-winning 鈥淓nglish,鈥 the 鈥 the first play to gross over $3 million in a week 鈥 and 鈥淪tranger Things: The First Shadow,鈥 an effects-driven prequel to the hit Netflix show.
Two plays and expensive tickets will probably get nods in the revival category 鈥 with Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr, and 鈥淥thello鈥 with Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal. Two other possible candidates are 鈥淥ur Town,鈥 starring Jim Parsons and Katie Holmes, and a millennial-targeting 鈥淩omeo + Juliet鈥 with Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler.
Safe bets for best musical revival candidates are McDonald's 鈥淕ypsy鈥 and the 鈥淪unset Blvd.鈥 That means 鈥淔loyd Collins,鈥 鈥淧irates! The Penzance Musical鈥 and will likely be competing for the other two slots.
Tina Landau, a Tony-nominated director, playwright and lyricist, wasn't able to see any shows this season for a very good reason. She had two shows 鈥 鈥淔loyd Collins鈥 and 鈥淩edwood鈥 鈥 open months from each other.
鈥淚鈥檓 very glad that there鈥檚 so much work,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 feel like when you have a season this big, there鈥檚 room for everyone and everything. Some are apples and some are pears and some are bananas and some are peaches. I just feel very blessed to have had two works that matter to me so much open at the same time, or open ever at all.鈥
Turning to the actors
On the male side, outstanding work was turned in by Darren Criss in 鈥淢aybe Happy Ending,鈥 Jonathan Groff in 鈥淛ust in Time,鈥 Tom Francis in 鈥淪unset Blvd.,鈥 Jeremy Jordan in 鈥淔loyd Collins鈥 and Andrew Durand in 鈥淒ead Outlaw.鈥
Eyes will be on this season's 鈥淪uccession鈥 stars 鈥 Culkin and Sarah Snook 鈥 hoping to join their old co-star Jeremy Strong with Tony love. Strong in a revival of 鈥淎n Enemy of the People.鈥
Snook is virtually a lock in the best actress in a play category, playing all 26 roles in 鈥淭he Picture of Dorian Gray.鈥 Her competition likely will be Sadie Sink from 鈥淛ohn Proctor Is the Villain,鈥 Laura Donnelly in 鈥淭he Hills of California鈥 and LaTanya Richardson Jackson from 鈥淧urpose.鈥
Some Hollywood A-listers 鈥 Washington, Gyllenhaal and Clooney 鈥 could make the lead actor in a play category, along with Cole Escola, who wrote and starred in 鈥淥h, Mary!鈥 The fifth slot could go to Connor, Parsons, Daniel Dae Kim in 鈥淵ellow Face鈥 or Robert Downey Jr., who made his
As for competition for McDonald, Scherzinger in 鈥淪unset Blvd.,鈥 Helen J Shen from 鈥淢aybe Happy Ending,鈥 Jasmine Amy Rogers in 鈥淏oop!鈥 and Sutton Foster from 鈥淥nce Upon a Mattress鈥 are strong candidates.
The Tony Awards will be handed out June 8 at Radio City Music Hall during a telecast hosted by 鈥淲icked鈥 star and Tony winner
